Wickham Park 0 John Roan 1
TEAM: 4-2-3-1
Mick Phillips
Jamie MacFarlane, Paul Garrett, Steve Finch, Mark Cooper
Cameron McBride, Mark Brooks
Simon Bridge, Mike Jones, Matt Nelson
Danny Hollis
Substitutes: Gabriel and Cliff Harvey (Danny's mate)
Goalscorer: Cliff Harvey
MATCH REPORT:
With questions being asked about the whereabouts of the previous 2 weeks subs money, and the rapid booking of Rafa's trip to Rhodes on a "search for young foreign talent", inspiration was required and duly provided by stand in Guvnor, Paolo Davinho.
Inspired Decision 1. The recall of Skipper G from his "loan" to Devon - Inspirational
Inspired Decision 2. The loan of his shinpads to Jonesy - Inspiring
Inspired Decision 3. The Deadline Day signing of striker Cliff Harvey - Inspired
With several players missing through injury and absence Danny Hollis made a welcome return to the side and brought along "Uncle" Cliff Harvey to bolster the squad. As is customary at Wickham, G lost the toss despite the ref never showing the coin, and we were forced to kick downhill first half. A solid start was made and although we had good possession, the final pass left a lot to be desired and chances were rare. 25 minutes in and Wickham Park made the first of there 25 substitutions, but still Roan were in control, G missed a couple of good chances from corners and Danny had a couple of efforts that he would have expected to do better with. Half time came with Mick not having had a worthwhile save to make and the score at 0-0. Inspiration was required, and with Danny showing his age and Simon showing the effects of drinking until 2.00am the previous night (honourable mention to Matt Nelson at this point, who had downed 13 pints at his new favourite local The Beer Dispensory and was still full of as much running as usual), both were withdrawn and replaced by Gab and Cliff.
Wickham Park's substitutions continued apace and seemed to affect the cohesion on both sides with not a lot of good football being played. As the half wore on Finchy and G were called into action on more than one occasion as Wickham launched long balls down the slope and Mick had to pull off a couple of fine saves.
As Wickham Park made their 24th and 25th substitutions of the game with 20 minutes left, Davinho decided to strike. Changing the agreed substitution of Danny for Jonesy, he instead brought off both full backs, Jamie and Coops, who had put in tireless stints, and put Simon and Danny back into the fray and with just 7 minutes left his tactical nouse paid dividends. Jonesy was sent racing down the right flank and, off of Davinho's pads, sent in a cross for new signing Cliff to superbly volley into the back of the net. Wickham poured forward and only an excellent last ditch challenge from G prevented a late equaliser, before the ref blew for full time having played 15 minutes added time for all the substitutions!
Not a great performance, but a win nonetheless.
Man of the Match:
Inspirational Decisions, proving you don't need to look abroad for new signings, and all the subs collected and accounted for - Paolo Davinho
Well, at least that's how Rafa would have reported it!!
In reality both sides were affected by the number of substitutions they made and it was difficult for Cam and Mark (who must have been confused over which players they were meant to be marking) to dictate our tempo. Finchy and G were excellent at the back, particularly in the second half as they played the long ball downhill all the time.

Toby or not Toby?
Fiorentina or Juventus - that is the question?

TEAM: 4-4-2
Mick Phillips
Jamie MacFarlane, Paul Garrett, Steve Finch, Simon Bridge
Vinny Soodin, Cameron McBride, Mark Brooks, Matt Nelson
Danny Bottono, Cee Burton
Substitutes: Mark Cooper, Gary Watson
Goalscorers: Cee Burton, Gary Watson, Danny Bottono
MATCH REPORT:
Matt Nelson was full of praise for Roan's new keeper Michello Phillipsio whose inspired performance eventually led to Roan's 3-0 win against 'very' local rivals Toby.
Indeed Matt was caught telling his mates from Avery Hill FC about Roan's new keeper and his footballing history.
Outside the Roan home dressing room Matt was caught saying: ' Yeah, our new keeper Michello used to play U21 for Fiorentina... or it might have been Juve.'
He added: 'He may be getting on a bit now but Michello is clearly not pasta his best and he still loves a pizza the action.'
Indeed Mick Phillips was brilliant.
The former Crawley Town No.1 made two breath-taking saves in the first half. He also saved a penalty and the two sides went off at the break somehow goalless.
Goals win matches but in this case saves can win them too.
The second 45 minutes were completely different from the first.
Roan dominated from the 46th minute and Cee Burton playing in an emergency centre-forward role broke the deadlock.
The London fireman answered Roan's 999 call and fired home brilliantly in the 58th minute.
Shortly afterwards one became two when impressive substitute Gary Watson added the second with a shot from outside the area.
Danny Bottono wrapped up the game for Roan when he beat the offside trap, ran half the length of the pitch and rounded the Toby keeper.
Eight goals in two games, all in the same goal on the same pitch and Roan made amends for their defeat to Toby the previous season.
Roan player boss Rafa the Gaffer was delighted:
'Great performance from my lads today,' he boasted.
He added: 'Mick was the difference between the two teams. Top quality from him and I know Matt's asked him for his autograph to show his two boys.'
'I'm also pleased to see Toby boss Geoff back on the touchline after his heart scare. He's a great guy, good manager and was very gracious in defeat today - a top bloke.'
MAN OF THE MATCH: Mick Phillips
STATS THE WAY TO DO IT: Gary Watson became the first referee to score in a match. He brilliantly officiated the first-half before firing in Roan's second goal.

GOAL SCORERS: Russell Bamford 3, Danny Bottono, Mark Brooks
SUBSTITUTES: Russell Bamford, Jamie MacFarlane
MATCH REPORT:
John Roan came from two down with 30 minutes to play in a match that should be running on Sky Classics for years to come.
On a beautiful morning - Princes Park arrived in Kidbrooke with a huge reputation and left with their tails between their legs or somewhere it ain't very sunny.
It was 12 against 10 for the first 11 minutes as the way side* dominated play and went ahead with their first effort.
New Colombian keeper Fabian was beaten in the only spot he could not reach and Roan looked like they were in for a hard morning. Perhaps Fab was still working out who was 'C' and who was 'G' in front of him?
Returning skipper 'G' rallied his troops with Brooksy and Jonesy outstanding in front of him. Roan started to get into the match and rest of the half was dominated by the home side and Princess Park were on the back foot for the next 34 minutes.
Unbelievably Roan could not find an equaliser. Brooksy and Jonesy went close and the Park keeper looked impressive between his posts.
The half-time team talk was an easy one for Roan's player/boss/referee Rafa. The home side knew they were in the game and just one goal would see them favourites for all three points. You could feel the adrenalin in the air.... as the teams headed for the centre circle and G in particular was very pumped.
As the second half got underway chance after chance went missing. The Park keeper made three tremendous saves. One from a Jonesy free-kisk was simply outstanding.
Totally against the run of play in the 58th minute Princess Park scored from a corner.
Game, set and match for Princess Park? You could feel the relief from their players and bench.
But it was No way Jose?
The Roan team boasting a team of nations would not give up that easily. And in an incredible last 32 minutes they scored 5 goals and could have had more. First half substitute Russell Bamford scored the all important first goal. Not for the first time Russ tricked himself and everyone on the pitch before beating the keeper.
Vinny Soodin thought he'd equalised after another great run and shot but was ruled marginally offside.
Danny Bottono opened his account for his new club shortly afterwards with a 'tap in'.
Princes Park had gone. If it was a boxing match it would have been stopped!
The outstanding Bamford and Brooksy added goals three and four. The Princess Park keeper kept out efforts from several other Roan players before Russell beat him from 20 yards with a magnificent strike in the last minute of the game.
'You're the best team we've EVER played', said some of the opposition. Praise indeed.
Roan player boss Rafa The Gaffer had a smile on his face bigger than Paul Davies bank account.
'The lads were ALL outstanding. They should all be really proud of that performance. I never thought for a minute we wouldn't get something out the game'.
He added: 'Their keeper was their best player which says it all.'
'It's hard to pick a man-of-the-match from my side. Russell's hat-trick was top drawer, G was awesome and he's a 'born winner'. Jonesy and Brooksy were as Sky's Cammy would say magnificent.'
Rafa then boasted: 'Today was up there with last season 5-1 destruction of Metro Gas 5-1. And today we were without Finchy, Troy, Paul Davies, Gary Watson and many, many more class players.'
'If they all come back what a problem I'll have - but one any manager dreams about.'
RATINGS:
Fabian (COLOMBIA): Deja Vu! New keeper Fabian was 'sensational' in the warm-up but beaten by Princes Parks first attempt and his first job was to pick the ball out the net. Amazingly a repeat of Roan's former No1. Craig Seniors debut a few years ago.
Simone Le Bridge (FRANCE): French loving Simone made a fine start to his *Princes Park debut finding yellow shirts with his first four passes of the game. Another late Saturday night on Kronenbourg bierre - but at least he showed up! (Gary Watson take note).
Paul Garrett - G (GB - some say GBH): The imposing Roan skipper never put a foot wrong, won every header and tackle and put the Princes Park centre forward in his pocket all game. 'Retiring' is costing the big man a fortune. One season ends and he throws his boots away and as another seaon starts he has to buy new pair.
Cee Burton (JAMAICA): Impressive at centre-back - yet again. Cee's left foot and long throws were a constant menace to the opposition. Held things together in a make-shift back four with only himself and G natural defenders.
Matt Nelson (GINGERLAND): Looks like he's played left-back all his career. Matt's stats look impressive. Pass completion - 87%, tackles won - 100%, Sunday afternoon ale's drunk - 12. Reminds his team-mates of Stuart Pearce in his pomp. The new Psycho!
Vinny Soodin (MAURITIUS): Vinny completed his first 90 minutes for The Roan. Skillful, exceptionally quick and never stopped working hard. The opposition players were run off their feet and Vinny was perhaps a little unlucky to have a goal rule out for offside.
Mark Brooks (ENGLAND): ........ And on this performance he could still make Roy's next squad. Brooksy was coolness personified. Never stopped wanting the ball, his passing sublime and his finish for Roan's fourth capped everything. England cap?
Cameron McBride (PERUVIAN JOCK)): Roan's Scottish, South-American eventualy got to grips with his right-sided midfield role and played his part in the home sides engine room that just would not let the opposition rest. Will Cam vote YES or NO today?
Mike Jones (YORKSHIRE): By 'eck did this Northern lad oozes class. Despite the opposition handing out Jonesy some rough treatment he never stopped linking play between midfield and attack. Unlucky not to score with a couple of great free-kicks. Lucky Jonesy is still available for the Roan after he offered his skilful and slippery skills to the judge on Wednesday.
Danny Bottono (ENGLAND): Scored his first goal for the club. Danny described it as '25 yarder after beating three, maybe four players'. It was actually from 25 inches! But the all important equaliser.
Gabriel (CHILE): Played the first 25 minutes and last 22. His speed and direct running caused the tiring Princess Park defenders problems and in the end they were begging for the game to stop. No Mas!
SUBSTITUTES
Jamie MacFarlane (CANADA): Came on at right-back for the second half and his job manfully. Mounties tend to get their man.
Russell Bamford (ENGLAND): 9.55am - still at home........ 10.25am - at the Esso garage......... 10.40am - getting changed on the touchline......... 11.10am - finally enters the field of play........ 11.45am - scores Roan's first goal......... 12.05pm - scores his second goal........ 12.18pm - scores Roan's 5th goal and completes his hat-trick.
The current 'Cock-of-the Year' can finally hand the trophy over this weekend - maybe to himself?

John Roan 1 St Joseph's 1
TEAM: 4-2-3-1
Gary Rosslee, Simon Bridge, Steve Finch, Cee Burton, Mark Cooper, Cameron McBride, Mike Jones, Russell Bamford, Paul Davies, Vinny Soodin, Danny Bottono
GOAL SCORER: Paul Davies
SUBSTITUTES: Matt Nelson, Gabrielle McBride, Jimmy O'Leary
MATCH REPORT:
It was a case of deja vu when Roan took on St Joseph's during the opening game of the 2014/15 season.
Back in May the two sides met for the first time. The score ended 1-1. Roan dominated over the 90 minutes and should have come away from The Beaverwood Club with all 3 points. 3 months later but this time at The Roan it was the same story.
In an entertaining match both sides played good football. Yet again St joseph's will be wondering how they escaped with a draw. This time it was Roan who opened the scoring after 25 minutes from a typical smart finish from Paulo Davies.
Debutants Vinny Soodin and Danny Bottono (yes Simon - that is there real names) both had early chances to open the scoring but it was the oldest man in the side (until Rafa entered the field) who finally beat the St Joseph's keeper.
Roan's lead did not last long and St Joseph's equalised within 6 minutes. Their clever forward chipped the on-coming, on-loan Farnborough keeper Gary Rosslee after looking suspiciously offside. Unbelievably that was the end of the scoring. Roan had several chances to win the game but nobody in a Beckham 23 shirt could find the back of the net.
Rosslee made a great save in the last ten minutes following a St Joseph's corner and The Roan lost both Davies and Jones in the second half through injury and tiredness.
Roan player/boss Rafa the Gaffer was pleased with his sides performance - if not the result. 'St Joe's are a good passing team and have lots of experience. That's twice we were the better team against them and twice we've failed to win. I look forward to our next encounter in May'. He added: 'Considering we were without several key players, G, Gazza, Troy and Brooksy and the fact we started with two debutants it was a good first game and performance.'
'New signings Danny and Vinny fitted in well and we are all looking forward to next week's match against Riverside Wanderers. We have a 100% record against the Kent side....... Let's Ave It!'
RATINGS:
Gary Rosslee: Farnborough's keeper surprised the Roan team with his pre-match warm-up before the game leading The Roan on a jog accross the pitch. For some of the home side it was the furthest they'd run all summer. Only beaten by a clever chip from the 'offside' St Joseph's forward.
Simon Bridge: His pre-season marathons and tri-athlons look to have paid dividends. Fit as a butchers dog Simon was everywhere and played at full-back and then midfield. Superb man-of-the-match performance - just.*
Steve Finch: Skipper Finchy's second game of the season after playing for the Super Vets last week. They didn't want him back after conceeding 6 goals but Steve bravely skippered the young vets despite a back-injury which obviously hampered his usual forward forays into the opposition half.
Cee Burton: Formed a formidable central defensive partnership with Finchy and they came out on top against an experienced and clever St Joseph's forward line. Cee's subtle passing was a highlight of the match.
Mark Cooper: 'Bainesy' as keeper Gary kept calling him played in both full-back positions with equal success. Evertonian Mark even had a few chances to score. Fininshing not the best part of his game but Coops worked hard to get into great forward positions.
Cameron McBride: Another Roan player who'd obviously put in some graft over the summer. And probably put in a few miles in his beloved Peru, Colombia and Chile. Cameron started the season where he left off - full of energy in the centre of Roan's midfield. Russell trusts him explicitly on the pitch but not with the whip money!
Mike Jones: Didn't last the 90 minutes after playing 5-a-side football on Friday but Jonesy's mazy runs and close ball control were other highlights of the morning. Let's hope his trickery continues when he goes up against Her Majesty in September.
Russell Bamford: Chose the Roan over his beloved Spurs and the return of Harry Redknapp. Mr Bamford was his usual vocal self on the pitch and in the bar and unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.
Paul Davies: Sweet and sour for 'Paulo'. Scored a wonderful goal and could have had another. Unfortunately injured his ankle and spent Bank Holiday Monday in hospital. He left on crutches - although he's no quicker without them. Major doubt for next week and rumoured to be booking another holiday.
Q: Where does he get the cash? Q: Are subs going up to a tenner?
Vinny Soodin: Impressive running and work rate from new boy Vinny. Could have scored twice on his debut. Tottenham's Nacir Chadli showed him how to score a brace a few hours afer Vinny left the field at half-time for the world famous home of The Spurs!
Danny Bottono: Another Roan debutant. The big No.9 ran himself into the ground and did well for only his second game in ten years. This boy will score goals when he gets his touch back. Left straight after the game to work on his fitness and did a couple of cycle stages of Le Tour de Essex in the afternoon.
SUBSTITUTES:
Matt Nelson: For great left backs one thinks of.......... Roberto Carlos, Stuart Pearce, Paulo Maldini, Kenny Sansom, Ashley Cole, and now Matthew Nelson..........!
Garbriel McBride: Cameron's South American (Chile?) relative (long lost brother?) doesn't know the offside law and missed the St Joseph's equaliser while assisting the referee but when he came on for Paul Davies he made some good runs down the right wing.
*Jimmy O'Leary: Impressive in his suit and then his boots. Rafa's 20 minute cameo role almost earned him the man-of-the-match award. Despite his injuries his 'forward' passing, energy and power gave The Roan a boost when Jonesy couldn't move another step.
REF WATCH:
Allowed the beautiful game to flow beautifully. Had no help from his assistant with the controversial St Joseph's equaliser. The Frank Sinatra tribute act and actor is on TV in two adverts at the moment. When asked how he managed it all the man in black (orange actually) said: 'I do it My Way'.
NEXT GAME:
We are at home to Riverside Wanderers this Sunday. Paul Davies is a major doubt and both Finchy and Jonesy probably need the week and a thai massage to get over their knocks etc.
I think Russell is away and someone else too? Cee is trying to get the day off work. Hopefully, Gazza Watson and Mark Brooks are available and maybe a few others? We will be welcoming Michelo Phillipsio to The Roan. Michelo or Mick will don the No.1 shirt for us after playing 45 minutes for the Super vets last week.
He is a former Italian U-21 international and had spells at both Inter and AC Milan. He speaks pretty good English - but let's be gentle with him.
Please let me know if you are fit and want to be part of the squad ASAP. It makes my job much easier. See you all at 10.am Sunday.
Rafa - The Gaffer
TEAM: 4-4-2

GOAL SCORER: Troy Ashby
SUBSTITUTES: Tony Marsh, Paul Tate, Gabriel
MATCH REPORT:
For the second week running Roan were held at home by inferior opposition. Stato Paul Davies needs to check the stats for the last time Roan drew two games in row.
On Sunday, Riverside Wanderers visited The Roan for the very first time and were lucky to play the home side on the smallest pitch available.
Indeed it was The Roan's first game on The Quaggy for over a season and the tight pitch does not suit the young vets quick, slick, free flowing football with one transition flowing into another transition with seamless ease......... and it ain't bloody great for keeping hold of expensive match balls as they fire off into the surrounding trees and bushes.
Wanderers took the lead aginst the run of play. Simon Bridge made a brilliant last-ditch tackle but the ball ran onto debutant keeper and former Italian U-21 Michello Phillipsio.
The referee awarded a free-kick which was smacked into the net before anyone could blink.
The rest of the half indeed the whole game was dominated by the home side. Chance after chance went begging and the Wanderers keeper made several fine saves before leaving the field of play after bending his thumb back midway through the second half.
Troy Ashby eventually got the Roan equaliser in the 65th minute. It was no more than he'd deserved after working hard all game.
Despite more chances, an incredible miss from substitute Paul Tate and a 'good goal' disallowed by the Riverside official the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Ironically that's the result of last years match against Sunday's opposition The Sun. Surely not again?
RATINGS:
Simon Bridge: Another impressive display at right back from midfielder Simon. Even more impressive after my next door neighbour told me they'd been out drinking together until 2.am Saturday morning. The boy can play and boy can he drink.
Tony Halliday: Held together a make-shift back four with command and ease. Tony reads the games so well and sees the picture before it happens. Contender for best player on the pitch.
Cee Burton: Tough tackling and super-fit Cee had another excellent game in the middle of defence rather than his usual left sided position. Fantastic effort to try and get one of the match balls back too.
Matt Nelson: Filled in again at left-back and looks like he's played there all his career. I suppose Matt's used to filling holes as he is a plumber by trade - allegedly.
Vinny Soodin: First half only again for Vinny before he left for The Lane. Played on the left.... played on the right...... then off to see Tottenham who played like shite!
Mark Brooks: Brooksy was his usual composed self - running the midfield, winning tackles, getting forward. Mark had a goal disallowed and was definitely not the one 'ruled' offside by the Wanderers assistant referee.
Cameron McBride: Up against a vastly different and improved Riverside team Cameron skipperd The Roan and led by example. Never has a bad game.
Gary Watson: Instantly linked up with new boy Vinny. Swapped sides constantly and if they ever combine to score a goal watch out for the swapping of saliva.
Danny Bottono: Unlucky not to get on the score sheet again when Wanderers keeper made two fine saves. Another player injured and struggled with a thigh strain in the second half.
Troy Ashby: All-action display from Troy. Kept the Riverside defence on their toes all game. Scored a deserved equaliser and just surpassed Tony Halliday for man-of-the match.
SUBSTITUTES:
Tony Marsh: Marshy is a class act and has a wand of a left foot. Will have to keep him on his right peg next week when he'll be playing for The Sun.
Paul Tate: Early contender for miss of the season but it was good to see Paul back in a Roan shirt.
Gabriel: Another good twenty minutes from Gab. One effort stung the keeper hands.
REF WATCH: The Man in Orange stunned both teams with his penalty award but did call out to Simon. In the words of Sinatra...... Accidents Will Happen.....
